What is Animation?

Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of static images (frames) to create the illusion of continuous motion. Because each image is slightly different from the one before it, our brains merge the rapidly changing pictures to perceive fluid movement. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Main Techniques of Animation
Animation encompasses a variety of styles, each requiring different tools and techniques. [1, 2]
  • 2D Animation: The classic, flat style (like early Disney or Anime) created by drawing or painting successive images on frames. Modern 2D animation is often done digitally using vector software. [1, 2, 3]
  • 3D Animation: Computer-generated imagery (CGI) where digital characters and environments are built in a 3D space and manipulated using digital skeletons (rigs). This is widely used in Pixar films and modern video games. [1, 2]
  • Stop Motion: A highly tactile method that involves physically manipulating real-world objects or puppets and photographing them frame by frame. Subtypes include claymation and Lego animation. [1, 2]
  • Motion Graphics: The art of animating graphic design elements, logos, and text. Commonly used in television broadcasts, commercials, and explainer videos
